------------------------------------
* Scott Mcgee, James Benole, Larry Miller, Jon Whitehouse,
Mark Lyden and Tim Zann for their help in testing this program.
* Thanks are also extended to my partner, Aldo Pucci, who
provided me with good "constructive criticism," and who got me
started BBS'ing.
User Supported Software
-----------------------
This program is distributed under the User Supported
Software Concept. User Supported Software is a way to allow you
to review the program, test its operation on your system
configurations, and determine whether or not you feel the
program is suitable for you and your users before you have to
register it.
If you find that Numbers And Sharks fulfills your needs, you must
register your copy. If you do not register it, then you must stop running
it. Registration is mandatory if you decide to use the program and wish
support from the author. Further registration information is contained
in the included file ORDER.DOC. Check it out! You may decide its a great
deal for you and your BBS; That's the way we planned it!
Numbers And Sharks Files
------------------------
The following files were distributed by Mountain State
InfoSystems in the MSINS1.ZIP file:
NS.EXE -- The executable program file to start
Numbers And Sharks
RUN_NS.CNF -- ASCII configuration file you will need to modify
for your system
NS.DOC -- This documentation file
ORDER.DOC -- Information on registering Numbers and Sharks 1.0
at no cost!
If this .ZIP file did not pass Pkunzip's Auto Verification when you
unzipped it then I recommend that you discard all related files and call
WV\OnLine for a good copy.
Shareware vs. Registered Version of Numbers And Sharks
------------------------------------------------------
The shareware version (1.0) of Numbers And Sharks
has the following characteristics not found in the registered version:
--- ----- -- --- ---------- -------
1) The logon informational screens presented will read
"Unregistered BBS" instead of your BBS's name.
REGISTRATION will correct the above constraints PLUS bring you unlimited
technical support via WV\OnLine.
Registration
------------
is a very easy process. Included in the MSINS1.ZIP
file is a document called ORDER.DOC. Check out how you can obtain
registration at no cost!
Upon registration you will be added as a WV\OnLine paid subscriber with
sysop status. If you call WV\OnLine you should check out Support Door
for Sysops and Demo Doors.
About Numbers And Sharks
-------------------------
The features of Numbers And Sharks (Version 1.0) include:
<1> Compatibility with systems that are compatible with
PCBOARD.SYS, USERS.SYS, DOOR.SYS, CALLINFO.BBS,
DORINFOx.DEF, CHAIN.TXT, or SFDOORS.DAT for interfacing
to the BBS.
<2> Generates an online "Top Ten Current Scores" bulletin, as well as
NS.BLT (ASCII) and NS.BLT (ANSI) files the can be
copied to other BBS files on your system. (Like the bulletin
section)
<3> Numbers And Sharks will exit back to the BBS if it detects
no keyboard activity for 4 minutes. At input prompts,
it will return to the BBS after 3 minutes of inactivity.
<4> Numbers And Sharks automatically determines if the
remote system has color capability. If it does, the
user will see color graphics screens, otherwise,
monochrome graphics will be sent. Non-ANSI callers
will be immediately returned to the board.
Setting Up Numbers And Sharks
-----------------------------
A file called RUN_NS.CNF was sent with the MSINS1.ZIP
distributed by Mountain State InfoSystems. This file must be
edited, using your favorite text editor, for the program to operate
properly.
TO CHECKOUT "NUMBERS AND SHARKS" ON YOUR PC IN STAND-ALONE MODE
JUST ENTER 'NS LOCAL' FROM THE
NUMBERS DIRECTORY.
Currently, RUN_NS.CNF like this:
C:\SF\SFDOORS.DAT <- Location of SFDOORS.DAT ! or see below !
WV\Online <- BBS name
Robert <- Sysop's first name
Ducker <- Sysop's last name
C:\WCWORK\NODEx <- For WildCat! 3.0+ users only.
Location of work directory
The format for RUN_NS.CNF is detailed below. As above, there must
be no blank lines.
For Line 1 choose one of the following
--------------------------------------
C:\PCB\PCBOARD.SYS <- For PCBoard systems using PCBOARD.SYS
only.
C|\PCB\USERS.SYS <- For PCBoard systems using USERS.SYS
C:\BBS\CALLINFO.BBS <- For Wildcat! systems (prior to v3.0)
C:\BBS\DOOR.SYS <- For systems that support DOOR.SYS
C:\BBS\DORINFOx.DEF <- For QBBS/RBBS/RA. Replace x with Node #.
C:\BBS\SFDOORS.DAT <- For Spitfire systems.
For Remaining Lines
-------------------
WV\OnLine <- BBS name
Robert <- Sysop's first name
Ducker <- Sysop's last name
NOTE: Numbers And Sharks supports COM 1-4 on the standard IRQ's -
COM1/COM3 = IRQ4 and
COM2/COM4 = IRQ3. If you wish to use a non-standard IRQ, add the IRQ
number after the configuration filename. Let's assume your are
running N & S on COM1 and IRQ5. The command line passed to your
Door would be:
NS RUN_NS.CNF /5
The /5 tells N & S to use IRQ5 rather than the standard IRQ4 that
is normally used with COM1. No /x parameter is needed for the
standard IRQ's.
Running Numbers And Sharks
--------------------------
First, create a directory called "NUMBERS" (for example).
Then copy all of the files in MSINS1.ZIP into it.
The following command must be present in the file you use to
invoke door programs:
CD\SF\NUMBERS <- Path where the N & S files reside
NS RUN_NS.CNF
That's it!
Numbers And Sharks creates a file called NSUSERS.DAT that contains
the players' names and status information. It also creates a
file called DFRAME.ERR, which will list any errors that the program
might have encountered. It you get errors, please bring them to my
attention. The only files that must be present the first time
you run N & S are NS.EXE and RUN_NS.CNF.
N & S creates the others files it will need.
Resetting N & S
---------------
To reset N & S, delete the NSUSERS.DAT file from the NUMBERS directory.
Then delete all the .BUL and .BLT files. If you simply wish to reset the
scores, delete the NS.BUL file.
